JM Discusses Upkicks in Combat Jiu Jitsu on BMac’s Audio Adventure Podcast

For those of you who didn’t catch it, JM recently posted on his Instagram a screenshot of a text with Eddie Bravo where Eddie informed him that he finally got upkicks approved by the athletic commission for use in future combat jiu jitsu events. JM also discussed the change and how it came about a bit more in depth recently on Brandon Mccaghren’s Podcast BMac’s Audio Adventure . This is quite a game changer for the combat jiu jitsu ruleset, which consisted of your typical EBI rules – an all submissions legal 10 minute round and up to three overtime rounds starting from either the back or spiderweb position – but also allowed for open hand palm ....

Get to Know Your Instructor: Will Johnson

Will Johnson is a 10th Planet Bethlehem blue belt and trains in both the kickboxing and jiu jitsu programs at the school. He found his start with 10th Planet because his younger brother was training in the kids program at the time and JM, in his typical fashion, gave him a hard time until he started training as well right along with the kids. That was about 2 and a half years ago now and Will has pretty much been helping out as a kid’s instructor ever since. He also helps by teaching some of the kickboxing classes at the school and is there working on his own game just about every day of the week. Will has been at the school day in and day out and has made himself an integral part ....

Finishers MMA Student Paul Kameen Paints Epic Portraits

If you were to pass by 17 year old Paul Kameen on the street you probably wouldn't suspect that this young teen has so many hidden talents. About 11 months ago, inspired largely by hearing about mma and 10th planet jiu jitsu on Joe Rogan's podcast, the Joe Rogan Experience, Paul took to google in order to determine his closest 10th planet location and start training. 10th Planet locations are sparse on the east coast and 10th Planet Bethlehem/Finishers MMA was the closest location that popped up. Even with about an hour and 20 minute drive to the school, Paul was determined to start training and immediately enrolled in both the jiu jitsu and kickboxing programs. While he hasn't ....

Technique Spotlight: Z Guard Kimura to the Back in Training and Competition

One of the best things about training under Zach and JM at 10th Planet Bethlehem is that you can see they truly believe in the techniques they are teaching their students and they are using them in high level competitions. Almost exactly a year ago in April 2017, 10th Planet Bethlehem hosted ADCC veteran David Avellan for a seminar on his kimura trap system. The squad was already a fan of the kimura but after this seminar in particular a lot of people started using the kimura trap system even more in order to set up their attacks. One example is the kimura from Z guard in order to take the back or secure a back ....

April's Loaded Jiu Jitsu Event Line Up

April this year appears to be a great month for jiu jitsu, with quite a few big events coming up that the team plans to compete in. First up this weekend is the IBJJF DC Open on Saturday the 7th with Zach Maslany, Gabe Tejada and Dillon “D-Boy” Masington all signed up to compete. It appears that there is no one in Zach’s division at this time, so unfortunately he likely won’t be able to compete at this one. No need to fear though, as Zach had already planned to compete multiple times this month in what he jokingly called his “farewell tour.” Even with IBJJF this weekend falling through, he still has 2 other events right around the corner. Although ....

Get to Know Your Instructor: Jon "Thor" Blank

Jon “Thor” Blank is a recent 10 th Planet Bethlehem brown belt under Zach and JM after being promoted in December of 2017. He typically teaches both the fundamentals and advanced classes on Thursday nights, affectionately referred to by the squad as “Thorsdays.” In his younger years he was a wrestler and has 10 years of folk style wrestling experience, which formed a solid base for his jiu jitsu training. His good friends, Andrew and Kevin Jones, who were already training under Zach and JM, introduced him to 10th Planet Bethlehem. 10 th Planet was perfect for him since it is all no gi based and he never really had an interest in training in the gi, partly due ....

Why I Drive 2 Hours to Train at 10th Planet Bethlehem

When I tell people I train in Easton at 10 th Planet Bethlehem people often look at me like I am crazy. I live in central Pennsylvania, so Bethlehem is about 2 hours away, or an hour and 45 minutes on a good day with no traffic. Particularly considering there is a good school about 20 minutes from my house where I started training and earned my blue belt, people are compelled to ask why I would decide to start training at a school so much farther away. The short answer as to why I train at 10 th Planet Bethlehem is because they aren’t just a good school, they’re an exceptional
school. There are a lot of techniques in the jiu jitsu world that often just aren’t ....

Grace Dominates Her First Adult Tournament at Onnit Invitational 7

This past Saturday, Grace “the Silent Assassin” Gundrum competed in her first adult women’s tournament at the Onnit Invitational 7 in Austin, Texas. There were four ladies all vying for the title of Onnit Invitational Atomweight Champion and a cash prize of $2,500. Grace’s first match was against a 32 year old brown belt who was also a Strikeforce MMA veteran. Grace, undaunted by her opponent’s credentials, made it look easy and used the 100% to set up a triangle in no time, securing her spot in the finals. As if it wasn’t impressive enough submitting a brown belt over twice her age, Grace also quickly dispatched of her second brown belt opponent ....
