Jon “Thor” Blank Makes His ADCC Debut

This Saturday, September 28, Jon Blank will be making his ADCC debut in the -88 kg division.  ADCC is often referred to as the “Olympics of grappling” because becoming an ADCC world champion is arguably one of the highest no gi grappling titles that can be achieved.  There is a lot of money on the line and even getting into the big show is no easy task, as competitors have to either win one of the event trials that are held in different parts of the world or be invited to compete.  ADCC is only held once every other year and there are only 5 weight classes for the men (-66 kg, -77 kg, -88 kg, -99 kg, and +99 kg) with 16 competitors at each weight and 2 weight classes for the women (-60 kg and +60 kg) with 8 competitors at each weight.  With this level of exclusivity ADCC promises the absolute best talent in the grappling world and this year will be one of its biggest events yet, with Fight2Win promoter Seth Daniels helping with the production aspects to maximize the excitement for viewers.

Jon was invited to compete in the -88 kg division after only narrowly losing by points to west coast trial winner Josh Hinger, who is looked at by many to be the favorite at that weight class headed into this weekend.  Other top competitors at -88 kg include Craig Jones, Murilo Santana, Mike Perez, and Matheus Diniz, but really the entire division is stacked and will be extremely exciting to watch.  Jon has been working really hard to refine his game for the ADCC ruleset, since he is typically a submission only competitor, so it should be exciting to see what he has in store for this weekend.  Other 10th Planet representatives at ADCC include Geo Martinez and Keith Krikorian, who are both competing in the -66 kg division and will likely be matched up first round, and Elvira Karppinen, who is in the -60 kg division and made waves at the 2017 ADCC world championships by upsetting Mackenzie Dern.  You can check out the full list of who is in and who is out at ADCC here

The main event superfight will be between Andre Galvao and Felipe Pena and the event will span over the course of two days, with action on both Saturday and Sunday starting at 10 a.m. PT/1 p.m. ET each day.  Saturday will include the opening rounds of matches and Sunday will feature the semifinals, finals, the absolute division and the main event superfight.  Friday there will also be a meet and greet for the fans to come and take pictures with the competitors and then there will be a public bracket release.  This is definitely an event that you are going to want to tune in to and all of the action will be unfolding on Flograppling.

Due to Zach, JM, and Rene all flying out to California to support Jon in ADCC, kids’ classes will be cancelled September 26 through 30.  Adult classes will proceed as scheduled.
